	Work in Progress: Development and Psychometric Validation of an Expert Rating Scale for the Assessment of Cancer Patients' Psycho-Social Condition

Why a Specific Assessment Tool for Psycho-Oncology?

Diagnostic categories (DSM, ICD) are often not applicable to the problems presented by cancer patients.

There is no universally accepted system for the documentation of the psych-social condition of cancer patients.

The PO-Bado is a prerequisite fo quality management and treatment plans.

The 3 Phases of the Study:

Phase 1: Development and testing of the first version of the rating scale; establishing inter-rater reliability.

Phase 2: Application of the modified rating scale in a larger number of clinics; establishing construct validity; rater training courses.

Phase 3: Large-scale application of the PO-Bado in 50 institutions (1.500 patients); online version and online user support; data management.

Aim of the PO-Bado Project:

Development and psychometric validation of an expert rating scale that reliably assesses the specific characteristics of the psycho-social condition of cancer patients within a wide variety of treatment settings

Indentification of cancer patients' main problems and resources with a brief and economical instrument (no more than two pages, easy to complete)

Assessment of patients' needs for psycho-social intervention

Standardisation of psycho-social assessment procedures an documentation in psycho-oncology

Long-term Perspectives:

Management of a large database

Yearly statistics

Development of specific modules, e.g. follow-up modules, modules for specific patient groups

Specific studies, e.g. comparison of different institutions and patient groups

Use of the PO-Bado in quality management

Translation into different languages
